Things to do in and around King's Lynn

Museums, riverside history, a Georgian park, a Norman castle and an evening at the Corn Exchange - the best things to see and do in King's Lynn and nearby.

Stories of Lynn and the Town Hall

Stories of Lynn, in the Town Hall and the old Gaol House on Saturday Market Place, is the best introduction to the town's 800-year history. Highlights include the medieval King John Cup and the cells of the former gaol. There is also a free Stories of Lynn app with walking tours you can follow around the old town.

Lynn Museum and Seahenge

Lynn Museum on Market Street, run by Norfolk Museums Service, is home to Seahenge, the Bronze Age timber circle uncovered on the beach at Holme-next-the-Sea. The rest of the museum covers medieval pilgrims, maritime trade and local industry. Opening days and admission vary through the year, so check before you go.

True's Yard and the North End

True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum keeps the memory of the North End, the close-knit fishing community that once lived at the northern edge of the town. You can step inside restored fisherfolk cottages, a smithy and a smokehouse, then stop at the tea room.

The Walks and Red Mount Chapel

The Walks is a 17-hectare park close to the station and described by its managers as the only surviving 18th-century town walk in Norfolk. Tree-lined paths lead past the Gaywood River to the Red Mount Chapel, a small 15th-century octagonal brick chapel once used by pilgrims. There is a play area and cafe, which makes it an easy outing with children.

Shows, theatre and St George's Guildhall

The Corn Exchange on Tuesday Market Place hosts touring shows, music, comedy and screenings. St George's Guildhall on King Street is one of the largest surviving medieval guildhalls in England and is cared for by the National Trust. The main building is currently closed for a major renovation, so check the National Trust page for what is open.

Castle Rising and further afield

A short drive north east, Castle Rising Castle has one of the finest 12th-century stone keeps in England, set inside huge earthwork banks. Beyond it lie the Sandringham Estate and the West Norfolk coast. Visit West Norfolk, the area's official tourism site, is a good place to plan a longer day out.
