Start at the Tuesday market
The borough council runs a weekly market on Tuesday Market Place, with stalls set out across the big square in front of the Corn Exchange. Traders change from week to week, so treat it as a browse rather than a shopping list.
In the warmer months the Merchants Market also comes to Tuesday Market Place on selected Saturdays, with local food and drink producers alongside craft and homeware traders. Check the council's markets pages for this year's dates.
High Street and Vancouver Quarter
The pedestrianised High Street links the two market places and carries most of the familiar national names. Just off it, the Vancouver Quarter is a town-centre shopping area with fashion, homeware, food outlets and a handful of independent stores. Norfolk Street, running east from the centre, adds more everyday shops, takeaways and services.
Independents in the old town
Some of the most rewarding shopping is in the historic streets between the market places and the river - King Street, Queen Street, Tower Street and the lanes around them. Expect smaller shops, galleries, cafes and specialist traders rather than chains, and it is worth wandering slowly.
This directory lists local shops, makers and services across the town and the surrounding villages. If a favourite independent is missing, let them know they can add a free listing.
Offers, events and the town app
Discover King's Lynn, the town centre's Business Improvement District, brings together hundreds of local businesses. Its website and free app list town-centre events, offers and guides, which is handy for checking what is on before a visit.
Food shopping and everyday errands
For a weekly shop, supermarkets sit on the edges of town as well as near the centre, and villages such as South Wootton and Terrington St Clement have their own local shops. Butchers, bakers, delis and farm producers are worth seeking out too - many appear at the markets as well as in their own premises. Use the categories in this directory to find food, pharmacies, opticians and other everyday services close to home.
Getting there and parking
The station is a short walk from the High Street, and buses from the villages stop close to the centre. Shoppers from West Lynn can use the passenger ferry instead of driving round. Council car parks surround the centre - check current charges before you set off.
